Q. Are young people important to you as a councillor?

I received the following question…

Q. Hi Lynne, just wondering are young people important to you as a councillor?

A. Thanks for your enquiry. I care for the city and its well-being, and young people are its future. I have a 23 year old daughter living in Palmerston North, young cousins living here, and a friend’s son on the Youth Council - they all give me plenty of feedback about the issues they face in living here. I also remember my own feelings about Palmerston North when I was growing up here - I was one of those teenagers that couldn’t wait to escape the place, convinced that Palmerston North was dull, boring, and had nothing to offer me.
Since getting onto council last year, I have supported the “Made it Manawatu” initiative for youth industry training, better resourcing of the Youth Council, funding for a youth worker in Kelvin Grove, and the Student City initiatives. I have also advocated for an increased events and entertainment focus on young people.
So, yes, young people are important to me.
If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to get back to me.

Best Regards,
Lynne
