Hui Taumata 2005

From March 1 - 3, at Te Papa in Wellington, I was privileged to be a delegate at Hui Taumata 2005, the Māori Economic Summit. In 1984 Māori leaders and thinkers came together at the first Hui Taumata to share their dreams and ideas for the 20 years ahead. The 21 years since have seen huge growth and many achievements for Māori. Hui Taumata 2005 was much more than a three day hui. A programme of focused research and widespread discussion began in mid-2004 and was summarised into three Stimulus Papers which provided the foundation for the exchange of ideas at the hui itself. Over 400 invited delegates attended and it certainly appeared to be a stimulating time for all who participated. I was exhausted, stimulated, challenged, and encouraged by everything that was said and done at the hui. To have such a large gathering of people all prepared to share their wisdom and ideas in a positive, constructive manner and who were prepared to look beyond self-interest towards what needs to be achieved in and for Māori economic development over the next 20 years was a wonderful experience.
Economic development for Māori is linked with the development of the economy as a whole. Māori economic development is part of Palmerston North’s economic development. After I was invited to attend the hui the Economic Well-Being Committee voted to endorse my attendance. I am writing a report to that committee which will be available for download on this site once it has been added to the committee order paper.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Council for supporting my attendance. I have already passed a lot of information on to council officers and am hopeful that we can build on some of the findings of the hui.
What a week! Off to put my feet up now after a very intensive three days.
