Wow! Two blogs in one day!

Hi all,
No, I am not back to write about the issue of the day however as I have had several queries about one of the comments in another post you are being treated to a first - two entries in one day!

I have been taken to task for referring to the Mayor’s team as “Heather and the Quintuplets”.

I thought the expression was pretty sweet and inoffensive and I most certainly apologise to any who are genuinely offended by it.

I was at a meeting last week when someone I know well complained to me that this council was not getting on with the job and, as can happen in a congenial social environment, I replied in a light-hearted manner. I said, “Well, there’s a new band in town and it’s called Heather and the Quintuplets”. This was received in the same spirit it was given, but what I didn’t realise was how quickly this term would spread. Pet names and labels do tend to stick and I am sure you will have all heard of the “tight eight”. I thought my expression would be a nine-day-wonder and just disappear, however I have received e-mails from people who claim I am being petty and mean-spirited - and every one of them has claimed that none of the members of THAT band ever resort to name-calling.

Now, I will probably keep using that expression. Not because I am being petty and mean-spirited, but simply because the expression is obviously self-explanatory. While lots of people are now using it, and some complaining about it, not one person has asked me who I mean when I have referred to “Heather and the Quintuplets”. Pretty catchy name for a band don’t you think?
