Some achievements

Lobbied the last council to distribute surplus council computers to schools and community groups. Perseverance won out and now council computers which are surplus to requirements are distributed to schools and non-profit community organisations. I am the only councillor involved in this project.
Instigated the installation of new mobility parking spaces in Milson and Hokowhitu.
Advocated over hospital area parking and took residents concerns to the Mid-Central District Health Board.
Instigated a review of the mobility parking regulations within the District Plan to assess compliance with NZ Standard 4121:2001.
Holding a monthly “talk to your councillor” session at the Milson Community Centre where I am available to discuss any community issues and concerns with any member of the public. I also provide copies of consultation documents and many of the information packs, leaflets, etc. which are offered at council’s Customer Service Centre.
Acting as a voice for residents with concerns over the City Heart project. I provide regular feedback from residents to the City Heart Steering Group, attending in person to present the concerns, and providing these in a memo which goes to the design team. (I am not a member of the Steering Group).
Liaised with CBD residents over proposed changes to the Residential Parking Permit scheme and advocated strongly for council to consult with affected residents.
Advocated for the Featherston Street Pit Park Project. I sought sponsorship to support a web site for the Pit Park People Society, Inc. and created the site in order to make it easier for the Pit Park People to keep interested residents up to date with progress.
Acted as an intermediary between council officers and tenants in the Square Edge building and facilitated an acceptable outcome for all parties.
Promoted awareness of the Charities Bill and encouraged submissions.
Working to improve opportunities for older people to participate in the community and to ensure that Council policies support this aim. Working as a member of the Age Concern Manawatu Executive Committee to create a community for all ages.
Advocated for the provision of public access to the Linklater Block.
Participated in the review of the Resource Management Act.
Worked with the Department of Labour’s Community Employment Group and Victoria University researchers in developing the government Community ICT Strategy and the Digital Strategy. Attended conferences and seminars at my own cost in order to bring new ideas to our local community groups.
The list goes on….
To keep up to date with some of the things I am doing (but not all - that would get both too boring and too time-consuming) please check out the postings on my Blog.
