Top of clocktower back in place
Tuesday, 13 February 2007
On 8th February, the top of the clock tower that was sliced off a few months ago (to enable other refurbishment work to proceed) was restored to its original position. A photograph of the top piece back in position is below.
All structural strengthening of the foundations, base, columns and beams have now been completed. Over the next two weeks the top section (which has been lifted back into position) will be strengthened and structurally tied in with the rest of the tower structure.
The bells and the ladder have also been lifted and secured into the tower. Refurbishment of the clock mechanisms are nearing completion and re-installation is programmed to start around March 07.
The masonry shear walls and steel support structure for the Base Building have been completed. The podium roof slab has been poured and a water proof membrane will be applied on to the slab in about four weeks time once the concrete is fully cured. Feature panels are currently being constructed around the Rangitikei Street side. Carpentry works and glass windows to the base will be installed thereafter.
Installation of the Lantern on top of the Clock Tower, Architectural features, lighting and finishes will be carried out in March / April 2007.
The completion of the construction is programmed for end of April 2007.

The huge cross on top of the refurbished clock tower is totally out of proportion with the rest of the clock. Considering the controversy surrounding the appearance of a religious symbol on a city landmark, it’s rather cheeky to put an even bigger one on top. I’m appalled at the amount it has cost. Surely such money is better spent on roads and footpaths (the latter of which there are few of in Ashhurst, I might add). I’m disgusted that my money has been spent on the ugliness that is now the Square.

I completely agree with you J. Smith. I was opposed to it right the way through the process but was hoping I would be proven wrong and that the “lantern” would look okay. While I realise mine is a subjective and personal opinion - I just hate the “lantern” (the term used by city council). I hope my other misgiving doesn’t come to pass though, which is my concern that we could be paying high maintenance costs for it for years.
