There is no "job description" for councillors but it is expected that all councillors will be:
* Attending to enquiries from members of the public.
* Attending and hosting civic functions.
* Representing the Council on related organisations, where appointed.
* Attending and participating at meetings of ward committees or fora.
* Presenting prizes at school functions.
* Speaking to community groups, attending AGM's and launches, and other events as requested.
* Attending and participating at conferences and seminars.
On an average week, I spend around 35 hours reading, reviewing, and researching before making decisions at council meetings. Added to this, on an almost daily basis I am meeting with people, listening to views, answering e-mail, calls, and responding to letters. Each week also brings community meetings, functions and events. The workload is variable and brings a real challenge with prioritising the work and time commitments while (trying) to keep a balance between work and home life. A Councillor's role is only part-time but it is one which requires highly developed time management and organising skills to keep on top of. Outside of my work as a Councillor I also run my own business.
