On Saturday, it is eDay in New Zealand. It's the day when the country gets rid of its build-up of unwanted computer gear and mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable way.
Hard drives, monitors, keyboards, printers, games consoles, mobile phones and other computer gear can be dropped off at collection points in 28 cities between 9am and 3pm, where they will be recycled. There is no charge for the recycling.
For a complete list of drop-off points, go to http://www.eday.org.nz/how-can-i-get-involved.asp
I held back last year, despite having a garage full of old 286's, 386's and Pentium 1's. This year I think I will finally give up my fantastic PC from the 1980's - it was amazing at the time because I had upgraded to a powerful new machine that had 4Mb hard drive!
But I wish they were taking discs for recycling. For some reason I kinda thought I would find a way to access my old backups. I have backups on 5 1/4 inch floppy discs, 3 1/2 inch floppies, and even on Super Floppy discs (anyone else remember those?). I also have loads of documents and images I have been trying to get off my Iomega Zip drive discs - amazing to think that back then a 100Mb backup disc could do everything I wanted! Now, my pile of 1Gig USB drives are too small to be of much use!
Anyone got some great ideas for recycling old floppies and other disc's? Does anyone want some old software? My collection includes unopened MS-DOS, Windows 1.0, Windows 3.1 and 3.11 (probably the most reliable Windows ever produced), OS/2, NT 4.0....
I've often wondered if I should start a software museum!
