Travel, Study, Engage And Contribute

PNCC Press Release - Jaycee Trust

An overseas trip, a chance to study and an opportunity to give something back to the community through their profession, trade or calling.

That’s what a Travelling Fellowship scheme administered by the City Council is offering New Zealand citizens under the age of 40 and who live in Palmerston North or the Manawatu.

Applications for the Jaycee Trust Travelling Fellowship Scheme are now open and people have until Wednesday, August 8, to respond.

New Playgrounds

Two distinctive playgrounds will be installed in Palmerston North from early April following valuable feedback from surrounding neighbours.

The junior playgrounds for children up to eight years of age will be erected in Hokowhitu Domain and Farnham Reserve, Takaro and will be completed by the end of the financial year (June 30).

When the Council approved their installation to replace existing playgrounds, staff consulted residents in the immediate vicinity through personal visits and a leaflet drop.

In all 190 leaflets were distributed around Farnham Reserve and 110 around Hokowhitu Domain and recommendations from people were incorporated into the final design.

Q. Are young people important to you as a councillor?

I received the following question…

Q. Hi Lynne, just wondering are young people important to you as a councillor?

My article in Chaff

I wrote an article for publication in the student newspaper, Chaff. It was published on pg.12 Issue 22 which came out on 13th September.

Why you should be on the electoral role and vote in the city council elections.

1. Enrolling takes only a few minutes. You can pick up a pack at the council and post offices, or even do it online at www.elections.org.nz
2. Voting is important. If you don’t vote for the people you want to represent you then you will just have to put up with others you may not want making the decisions which affect you.
3. Because you can!

Unsure that anything city council does actually affects you? Well, consider this…

Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment in Palmerston North fell 51% in the three years to June 2004. The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs has a goal of zero youth unemployment by June 2005, trying to get all our young people into jobs or training, and off unemployment benefits. We still have some way to go to achieve this in Palmerston North. I strongly support the “Made it Manawatu” programme facilitated by Vision Manawatu and local Industry Training Providers and will continue to support moves to ensure all our young people have a good future in Palmerston North.
