Firefox has a number of SEO plugins to assist you with search engine optimisation of your website. Here is my list of the top 5 Firefox Add-Ons for SEO. Combine these plugins with the add-ons for web designers and you will find it easy to tweak your site for search engine optimisation and performance for human visitors.
SEO and search engine marketing are hot topics these days as sites compete to be seen amongst tens of millions of web pages. If you are unsure about just what is involved in opimising a site for SEO make sure you read SEO Basics - What is SEO?
Without further ado, here's my SEO top five:
- SEO For Firefox
"SEO for Firefox pulls in many useful marketing data points to make it easy get a more holistic view of the competitive landscape of a market right from the search results. In addition to pulling in useful marketing data this tool also provides links to the data sources so you can dig deeper into the data."
- Aaron Wall, developer of SEO for FirefoxIf you only wish to install one SEO add-on, this is the one to choose.
- KGen
KGen is a keyword generator that analyzes a page for keyword frequency and placement. It runs from a draggable sidebar on Firefox and is only visible when you want it to be (so no loss of screen real estate).
One interesting use of KGen is its ability to create a weighted list of the most important keywords on a page that can then be copied into a site for an almost-instant tag cloud.
- yExplore
yExplore adds quick access to Yahoo Site Explorer through a simple right-click. Select Domain and it opens Yahoo Site Explorer in a background tab with the domain of the site you were on already submitted. Select Page and it displays the indexed and backlinks stats for just that page.
This Firefox extension has been around for several years and is still a useful tool to use.
- SeoQuake (Plugin Home page) | SeoQuake Firefox Extension (Firefox Add-on directory)
SeoQuake consists of two functional parts. The first consists of a bar that provides data about the page you are on, the second allows for custom parameters for analysing search engine result pages – SERPs – for the most popular search engines.
Warning! This tool is very useful but must be used sparingly - you can be blocked from search engines if you misuse or overuse this add-on. There are also privacy implications with it so make sure you read the privacy policy before installing.
- Search Status
This plugin highlights Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Compete.com ranking, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN from an unobtrusive position at the bottom of the browser, on the status bar.
I have deliberately focused on SEO extensions here. There are a number of other useful plugins/addons for Firefox that help with site design and checking that everything is working as it should. Like the add-ons for web designers, everything you can do to improve the quality and content of your site has an impact on SEO. I will probably address the site management tools in a later post.
Do you use these Firefox add-ons or have you found some better ones?
