What is a Subdomain?

A subdomain is a "domain within a domain", it is essentially a subdivision of a larger domain.

Subdomains are individual web addresses built upon a pre-existing domain name, for example, forums.yourdomain.com.

By convention, a subdomain should not have the prefix of "www". (This is because "www" is, itself, a subdomain).

You will see many subdomains in action on the Internet. One example is, "mail.yahoo.com" a subdomain of "yahoo.com."

Steps to creating a subdomain using cPanel

Please follow the below steps to create a subdomain for your site.

  1. Login to your Control Panel
  2. Click "Subdomains" under the "Domain" menu
  3. Enter the subdomain you would like to add in the form field
  4. Click Add
  5. A confirmation screen will be displayed.

To access the files and data for your subdomain just look for a folder with the name you gave for the subdomain.
