What To Do When WordPress Auto Upgrade Hangs

Since the release of WordPress 2.7.1, which takes advantage of the auto upgrade feature of WordPress 2.7, there have been several reports of the upgrade hanging.

If, when you install the 2.7.1 upgrade, you get the message, "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute." don't panic - chances are your upgrade has completed. It seems, however, that a key file added during the upgrade process is not being deleted once the process has run its course. Here's how to fix that and get your blog working again:

  • Access the files in your site root, on the server - either through FTP or your server's control panel.
  • Locate a file called .maintenance. Note the dot before the name - if you are going in through your server control panel you may need to select the option to view hidden files before you will see it.
  • Delete the file.

Refresh your browser and your site should be functioning normally again. If the upgrade did not fully complete you will see the upgrade notice and your blog will still be running WP2.7. If this is the case, you will need to upgrade to 2.7.1 manually.

I hope this helps some of you who are encountering this bug in the WordPress auto update.

I've had a number of my sites not complete automatic WP upgrades since version 2.7. Basically the upgrade starts and never completes... it just "hangs" there although my site is not compromised. Thanks for posting this important info in case the site does hang on one of these automatic hang jobs. Cheers - Mal
