This site uses free, open source software and I would not consider any proprietary, commercial alternative. The main reasons for me using free/libre open source software (FOSS or FLOSS) are these:
- It's free;
- The source is available so I am able hack it and customise to my needs;
- I can test it out with no worries about vendor lock-in or wasting money if the software doesn't meet my needs (no more buying applications only to find I never use them due to limitations I had not expected);
- Support is as simple as getting involved with a software development community and sharing information.
Apart from that, I believe in sharing knowledge and collaborating on developing software that is useful to the masses. So, it appeals to the community-minded, altruistic streak in me as well.
I run my business from a home office and run both Windows and Linux on my computer network. I also routinely use the b2evolution and WordPress blogging platforms, the Mambo Open Source content management system, and develop code using PHP and MySQL. My web sites run on Apache, which is also open source.
